On January 29, 2009 the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act was signed by President Barack Obama. It sets the guidelines to read that the statute of limitations for pay discrimination resets with each new discriminatory paycheck.

Prior, there was 180 day limit holding stating the time for filing an equal-pay lawsuit was the date the pay was agreed upon, not the most recent pay stub, as ruled by a lower court. The new law gives workers alleging pay discrimination more time to take their cases to court. The law was enacted in response to Ledbetter v. Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co., 550 U.S. 618 (2007), by the U.S. Supreme Court.
